GARY A. LEAKE WOODWORKING
Saber-Legged Display Table
African Zebrawood with American Black Walnut
..... a continuation of a very limited series of whimsical yet functional art furniture inspired by its namesake the zebra: zebra-striped body wedges supported by dark walnut legs.
Quartersawn zebrawood (Microberlinia brazzavillensis) represents one of nature's most spectacular timbers with its parallel zebra-like alternating stripes of creamy heartwood with narrow veins of chocolate brown that warrant the naming of this beautiful timber. Zebrawood, also known as zebrano, is a member of the sweet pea family (Leguminoseae) due in part to the orange colored flowers that resemble those of the better-known sweet pea plant.
The American black walnut (Juglans nigra) saber legs, resembling a cavalryman’s curved sword, complement the intense contrasting colors of the upper surfaces. Lacking lower support members, the success of the design depends upon precise joinery for attachment of the legs to the upper pieces.
The display table has been hand finished with a durable oil-varnish to highlight the naturally contrasting range of colors and protect the beautiful patina of the timber while giving the piece a warm feeling to the touch.
As with all of his wood art pieces the title of the piece, creation date and artist information has been permanently stamped on the underside of the table.
